Oklahoma-Style Fried Onion Smash Burger Recipe

We all know and love a smash burger by now, but if you’re looking for a similar but different rendition, you’ve got to whip up this Oklahoma Fried Onion Burger made with medium chuck, thinly sliced onions, American cheese, and fluffy potato rolls! Our friends at Taste Toronto created this recipe to help you with a decadent option to serve when you’re looking for something indulgent.

  1. Heat up a large cast iron pan lightly coated in oil over high heat until almost smoking.
  2. Place ground beef into the pan and season with salt and pepper; add a generous handful of onions to the top of the balls and press down firmly with a heavy spatula until flattened. Cook for 2 minutes or until nicely browned, and then flip to the other side.
  3. Season again with salt and pepper. Let the mixture cook for 1 minute, and then add cheese.
  4. Add the top bun to the patty and place the bottom bun inverted on top, allowing it to steam and warm.
  5. Transfer the bottom bun to the plate. Top with pickles or any other desired condiments; then carefully scoop the patty and top bun onto the bottom bun. Enjoy!
